FAQs

What is an air curtain
An air curtain (air door) is a device that is commonly found above doors in commercial, retail, food service, and industrial settings. It creates a barrier of air that separates unconditioned outdoor air from conditioned indoor environments, while preventing the infiltration of flying insects, exhaust, dust, debris, and other unwanted outdoor elements. Of added benefit, a properly installed air curtain can pay for itself in as little as two years due to the energy savings it helps generate by reducing the load on a building’s HVAC system. Powered Aire Air Curtains can cover openings as small as a drive-through window and as large as an airplane hangar, and about every size in between.
How powerful is the barrier of air from an Air Curtain?
The stream of air discharged from a Powered Aire air curtain varies by several factors including fan speed, door size, motor size and other factors. Generally, the barrier of air is strong enough to prevent outside air, insects and other elements from entering without inhibiting workflow or access. To be rated as a Vestibule Exception air curtain, the unit must achieve an air velocity of 6.6 feet per second measured at six (6) inches above the ground.

More important than power is the uniformity of the air, which ensures a complete barrier. Powered Aire air curtains all employ a plenum that helps ensure a uniform and consistent barrier across the opening.
What are other names for Air Curtains
Air Curtains are also commonly referred to as Air Doors, Air Barriers, Air Seals, and Fly Fans.
What is the cost of an air curtain
As you can guess, Air Curtain costs vary by a variety of factors. Larger doors will require larger, more costly air curtains, but a 10W x 10H door may also require different mounting hardware, different housing, different heating, etc.
How does an air curtain save money?
An often-overlooked benefit of an Air Curtain is how it can generate a positive return on investment, often in as little as two years, due to the energy savings it creates. Powered Aire Air Curtains do this by lessening the heating or cooling load on a building’s HVAC system. This is achieved by preventing the entrance of unconditioned hot or cold outside air. By blocking the outside air, the HVAC system becomes more efficient and is not required to run as often. The result is an increase in energy savings, which means a decrease in energy bills.

In many regions, air curtains can also be used in place of vestibules, which means that fewer resources are required during the build out and more usable floor space is available through the elimination of a vestibule. These both create additional upfront and long-term savings.
